‘The Milkmaid’, sometimes called The Kitchen Maid, is a painting of a milkmaid,by the Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer between 1658-1661. Vermeer is best known for his extra-ordinary treatment of light, and the painting is on sight at the Rijks- museum in Amsterdam, as one of the main attractions of the Museum. For at least two centuries before the painting was created, milkmaids and kitchen maids had a reputation as being predisposed to love or sex, and this was frequently reflected in Dutch paintings of kitchen and market scenes from Antwerp, Utrecht and Delft. Some of the paintings were slyly suggestive, like ‘The Milkmaid’, others more coarsely so little treasure. 7 cm. Hand embroidered bead jewelry.
